Transparency is the clear disclosure of information, rules, plans, and actions
Accountability means ensuring that officials are answerable for their actions and that there are consequences when duties and commitments are not met.
Transparency and accountability need each other. Together they enable citizens to have a say about issues that matter to them and a chance to influence decision-making and hold those making decisions to account.
Public officials have a duty to act visibly, predictably and understandably to promote participation and accountability.
So far this year the Town Board has convened 82 workshop meetings. Most of them held in a small conference room in the Town Hall.
Have you ever thought of looking at the minutes of these workshop meetings to see what they discussed. Go ahead you will find the minutes here. Did you look, if you didn’t that’s okay, there’s really not much to learn from them except they do a lot in executive session and pass a motion 4-0 every now and then.
One thing you will notice however, they tend to table important issues at Board Meetings and then approve them the later at a workshop.
Case in point…
·Local law #8 keeping of Agricultural Animals tabled at 9/8 Board meeting, passed at 9/16 workshop
·Local Law #9 Transient Homes tabled at 9/21 Board Meeting, public hearing left open
·Renewal of Town Liability Insurance Coverage tabled at same meeting
·Both passed at the next morning at a 800 a.m. workshop… what changed?
Sure there’s notification of these on the Town website like this one:
Or how about this one:
Says it’s a workshop but….no minutes on that, maybe it was cancelled.
Am I repeating myself too much. Of course I am, because their clandestine behavior keeps repeating itself.
Is this the way you want your town government to operate?
