Grand Island Relay for Life starts today at 4pm. This will be my 10th year participating in Relay. It is truly the most emotional and inspiring event I have ever been to. If you have not been, you need to make it top priority to attend this year. You won’t be sorry!
Relay for Life is a community based fundraising event of the American Cancer Society. Today more than 5,000 Relay for Life events take place across twenty counties. The mission of Relay is to raise funds to improve cancer survival, decrease the incidence of cancer, and improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their caretakers.
Like many of you out there my life was touched by cancer. My Mom had lung cancer twice. The first time it was removed and she remained cancer free for six years. She developed a second lung cancer that was unrelated to the first cancer. This time she was not lucky enough that it could be removed. The second cancer was a very aggressive form of lung cancer. Mom was able to survive almost another year. Because of an excellent treatment program she was able to live her remaining time with quality and dignity. I know many of you will understand when I say it was a very special year. Not everyone gets an opportunity to say the things they need to say to each other, get the time to make whatever you need to…right. Life is rich and every moment counts. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about Mom and I know she would be my biggest supporter in my campaign if she were here today.
So when I get out there at Relay and walk, it is so more of our loved ones will have a better chance at survival, because we need them. Come out and join us beat cancer!
