It has been a rewarding experience to serve the Grand Island community. It is truly an amazing feeling to know you are making a difference. I will be out there walking door to door talking to the voters. Getting their thoughts and feelings on what their vsion is for their home town and to share mine. It is by far the most interesting and rewarding part of campaigning. Grand Islanders are nice people. When I talk to other candidates from other towns and hear stories about people being rude and nasty at the doors, I can honestly say, I have never had that kind of experience on Grand Island. I knocked on 5,221 doors in 2015. Grand Islanders were polite and friendly. Many were willing to talk and really do want to get to know the cnadidates.
Too often in todays world, perspectives gets distorted with the interactions on Facebook and the internet. I prefer to talk to people in person. A lot is lost in translation in e-mails and texts. There is nothing like person to person contact. I appreciate all those who taken the time to talk to me.
All who know me or have watched me at town board meetings know, I like to come prepared and prefer to collaborate with fellow board members rather than engage in a lot of discord. I am pleased to say I have worked with board members on a variety of programs and projects in harmony. But we all know that not all members have acted in a civil manner. It is disruptive and unproductive when that happens. Many asked me, “How do you deal with all that?” My answer to that is, “I keep my head down and keep on moving forward with what is important, working for the Grand Island community. The residents didn’t elect me to fight with other board members, they elected me to get things done.
I have helped organize community events with the Greenway Commission, Waterkeepers, the Chamber of Commerces and many other organizations bringing the reisents of Grand Island together to enjoy all the wonderful activites that we have to offer, kayaking, biking, bird=watching, boating and hiking as well as education sessions. I have worked with KidBiz for over 20 years, the 4th Judy and Light Up the blvd parades, Relay for Life & Variety club. I prefer to give back to the community in a positive way.
While actively interacting with community, I also know that there is other work that needs to be done. I am a committee member on several committees for Planning. Our board recent adopted the Master Plan developed by the Long Range Planning committee, we are now woking on to the Local Waterfront Revistaization Plan, Farmland Protection Plan & the Parks & Rec Master plan. It is important to have good plans in order to get grant funding and to make sure the vison for our community becomes a reality. I look forward to developing plans that preserve and that we can put into action for trails, eco-tourism and ag-tourism
I am liaison to the Golder Age Center. I have to say, it has been such a pleasure to be a part of the center. Jen Menter the Supervisor is such a delight to work with and the joy that the members share with everyone who comes there is inspiring! I never leave the center without a smile on my face. It is my job to make sure they have a good enviroment and good programs that improve their quality of life
There are so many aspects to my job as council and I look forward to continuing to serve my community. I look forward to talking to many of you in the next few months.
